The Scarf osteotomy for bunion correction

The scarf osteotomy is a way of dividing the 1st metatarsal in a Z-shape fashion to allow the metatarsal to be accurately moved , then fixed stably, thus correcting the bunion.

How cutting and moving the bone in this way can narrow the wide space between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals in bunion surgery is probably best illustrated by the following animation:
