What does the inside of my ankle look like?

The ankle joint, in common with most other joints, is lined throughout with smooth articular cartilage. This provides for low friction and pain free surfaces on which to weight bear

In addition, there is synovial fluid within the ankle joint which nourishes the cartilage and further provides for low friction. This fluid is produced by soft tissue within the joint which is known as synovium or synovitis if it is inflammed.
