Other toe deformities THE HAMMER TOE A hammer toe deformity is where the toe is flexed at the PIP joint and not the more distal DIP joint. There maybe increased extension at the MTP joint. It may effect any of the toes. Perhaps most commonly it effects the second toe in conjunction with a hallux valgus deformity. 
The surgical treatment we use is generally to release the hyper extension(1) which lets the toe sit flat. This is combined with excising the proximal toe joint(2) which straightens the toe and then transferring a tendon into the space created. This technique requires adhesive paper strapping to be worn over the toe for 6 weeks after the operation. Before and after pictures
